The topic of choice I focused on is the death penalty. The death penalty has really grew attention over the past couple of years, mainly because of the Boston Marathon bombing back in 2013. Before then I never really thought much about the death penalty and what it really meant. In an article I read on NPR, over the couple of years, organizations debated and took a poll saying whether or not the death penalty should be allowed. Before and after each debate they ask people if they agree or disagree with banishing the death penalty. 49% agreed and 34% were unsure before the debate. After the debate 54% agreed and 6% were unsure. Both sides of the argument had very strong and convincing evidence about the death penalty, and honestly I could not decide which side to root for. An organization going against the death penalty is the NCADP whose goal is to abolish the death penalty worldwide. Since the year 2000, 809 people were killed by death penalty. The region who holds the most death penalty killings and the southern states with 1,144 killings since 1976. I would disagree in abolishing the death penalty because I think if they get rid of it more killings will emerge and the killers will generate a "I don't care" attitude towards killing. Also I believe some of the people who were killed by the death penalty were wrongfully accused for the murder. An example of this happened back in 2011 with the Troy Davis murder. Troy Davis was accused of killing a police officer but the evidence they collected was going in favor for Davis but the Court saw it differently. So Troy Davis was sentenced with the death penalty and I think was wrongfully killed. The organization ACLU is there to protect and preserve individual rights and liberties for everyone, and I think more people should give more attention to these types of organizations to prevent more wrongfully death penalty killings from happening. If the government decides to keep the death penalty I would have the death penalty sit there as a threat towards the killers to scare them.
The death penalty has caught a lot of people's attention and I hope future use of the death penalty will be used very wisely and the Court will recheck the evidence over and over again just to make sure Troy Davis' death will not go down in vain.
