This and another law currently in review, the Human Trafficking Cornfield Act, refer to abortion rights. The cornfield act prevents the restriction of funds paid by perpetrators to their victims from being used to cover the cost of abortions. These bills both being pro choice has many religiously centralized house and senate members up in arms. These members believe that it is an infringement on the first amendment's right to religion. These strong seemingly christian beliefs are halting the attempts to abort a collection of cells.
What many say is that “If it's not your body why should it matter to you?” If you're not the one getting abortions then it shouldn't be your decision. Also no law is making anyone get an abortion it's just another preference. If you can't take care of a child emotionally, physically, or financially, than you should have that right to not have a child. There are so many scenarios that can make you not want to or not be able to have a child. If someone has a boyfriend who is abusive or if they have been raped they are required to bring that child in that terrible situation. How does that seem fair?
Yes, there are other options like adoption but that can have negative emotional effects on the child. Opposition to this law states that they're protecting the unborn. But do the unborn really need protecting. Inside the womb, children under a certain time have no consciousness, so they can't feel or have any emotions. So why are they so sacred?
“How come when it’s us, it’s an abortion, and when it’s a chicken, it’s an omelette?”
― George Carlin
There will always be people who do or do not want children. That's just the way life goes. So we shouldn't be taking away that choice from living, coherent people about the, pardon my science but, parasite, that is inhabiting their body. This argument has been going on ever since Roe v. Wade. There should always be a separation between church and state. That is how this country was made. We need to have our citizens best interests at heart. Allowing abortions and not receiving punitive action is simple. If it doesn't affect their job or work performance. Then you shouldn't be receiving punitive action. No matter what.
